The Asahi Shimbun's Advertising Guidelines
Ethical Guidelines
1.  Advertisements must convey the truth. 

2.  Advertisements must not be against readers' interests.

3.  Advertisements must not impair the quality of our paper.

4.  Advertisements must not infringe related laws and regulations.

Who is responsible for an advertisement?
The advertiser is solely responsible for its advertisement carried on our paper.  The advertiser is liable to any costs or damages inflicted on The Asahi Shimbun Company as a result of its advertisement carried on our paper.

Who has the right to accept or refuse an advertisement?
The Asahi Shimbun Company has the right to refuse printing of any advertisement on whatever grounds that it shall not be obliged to disclose.

General Rules

Following advertisements are not acceptable:

A.  Those that infringe or are likely to infringe related laws and regulations;

B.  Those for which the responsible party is not clearly known;

C.  Those of which contents are unclear;

D.  Those which are erroneous or inaccurate in expression and likely to cause misunderstanding;

E.  Those with names or photos of third parties without authorization;

F.  Those with expressions that excessively incite speculation or gambling;

G.  Those of fraudulent character, or of fraudulent business practices;

H.  Those that are superstitious or unscientific and are likely to mislead or cause anxiety to readers;

I.  Those that are likely to infringe human rights by discrimination, libel, and invasion of privacy;

J.  Those with expressions that may damage reputation or disturb businesses of others;

K.  Those with expressions that may be detrimental to the social order such as the following:

1.  Those that approve or idealize acts of violence, gambling, drug abuse or prostitution

2.  Those that cause repugnance due to ugliness, brutality or bizarreness

3.  Those with sexual descriptions that are direct and obscene

4.  Those that are likely to corrupt public morals or incite crimes

L.  Advertisements related to The Asahi Shimbun Company, such as:

1.  Those that amend or deny any news or articles published in our paper, provided they have been confirmed to be true and approved by us;

2.  Those that are likely to lower our reputation;

3.  Those that use expressions implying that The Asahi Shimbun Company supports the advertiser or recommends or guarantees its products or services.

M.  All other advertisements that are judged by us as inappropriate
