Outbound Japanese tourists

In 2001, 16,215,657 Japanese passport holders traveled overseas. That number fell by 9.0 percent from the year before due to the adverse effects of the terrorist attacks on the United States. Travel agents in Japan report that women between the ages of 20 and 29 comprise their largest customer base. However, compared to five years ago, the number of outbound tourists 50 years of age or older showed a substantial increase.

Asia was the most popular destination. The continent attracted 48.9 percent of Japanese people who traveled abroad in 2001. Other popular overseas travel destinations included North America, Europe, and Oceania, which were visited by 31.8 percent, 13.4 percent, and 5.6 percent of outbound Japanese tourists, respectively.

Tours for visiting U.S. Major League Baseball games and top European soccer league matches to watch Japanese stars in action remain very popular. Overseas trips with a clear purpose appear to be taking root in Japan.
