Japanese newspapers can be classified into the following three major categories:
- Nationwide dailies
- Regional papers
- Industry-specific papers (trade papers)
Nationwide dailies offer national news as well as articles customized
to their respective regions. There are five nationwide dailies,
all of which have correspondingly high circulation.
Regional papers are published in regions corresponding to administrative
divisions such as prefectures or municipalities. They carry
a large number of region-specific articles. There are more
than 50 regional papers in circulation.
Trade papers are published for various industries and business categories.
They are generally not delivered to homes.
